LoE: 10 Days
Project : Local Partnership for Tourism Development (Shams)
Period of Performance: March 2022
Location: Jordan
End Date: March 3, 2022

BACKGROUND:

Local Partnership for Tourism Development (Shams) is one of the Partners for Good’s (PfG) main projects. Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jordan, Shams aims at addressing several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It aspires to create jobs and economic opportunities through establishing linkages between local community members and private sector actors. By design, Shams project works on enhancing specific skills-based capacities within women and youth groups and assisting local communities in developing in-demand Jordanian products and services.

Implemented in both Ma’an Governorate and the Dead Sea area, the project celebrates all that is unique and authentic in focus on areas’ culture, heritage, and natural resources. For Shams project, the traditional identity, cultural values, and biodiversity of the Dead Sea and Ma’an are the core of the development process.

Since launched in November 2019, Shams has touched the lives of many. Opening doors, developing local capacities through quality training, and engaging and mobilizing communities. As a result, project components are growing as beneficiaries both individuals and CBOs, hand in hand with PfG, embarked on a journey of growth, learning, and mostly appreciation and acknowledgment of the untapped potential targeted areas and communities possess.

The local communities involved are the project’s biggest & most valuable assets. They, through the numerous partnerships formed with CBOs, hotels, public and private sector entities, remain the sustainability agent that ensures Shams diverse project components thrive & grow.

Engaging the tourism value chain in generating opportunities for local communities and business is key to this component. Linkages created between hotels and local women associations enable Shouneh women and small farmers to produce needed long-shelf products locally and supply them to hotels. Developed in partnership with local CBOs, the project involves a wide range of interventions carried out by PfG. This includes production facility renovation and equipment, capacity building for local women in food production, safety, packaging, and marketing as well as creating manuals and SOPs.

Shouneh natural long-shelf food products are rich with traditional flavors, prepared by the women of South Shouneh. The project is developed around the concept of using locally grown fruits and vegetables and the region’s unique traditional recipes and flavors to economically empower local women.

Sustainability is key to the success of “Shouneh”. Therefore, PfG ensured that the production facility acquires the needed licenses and permits from Jordan Food and Drugs Administration. Furthermore, as products are continuously being enhanced, PfG is creating numerous promotion and sales channels to ensure products are available for sale online and in selected stores functioning as a celebration of Al Shouneh’s culture and the resilience of its community as well as a sustainable economic enabler for its women.

Products include:

• Orange Jam

• Strawberry Jam

• Tomato sauce

• Dried tomatoes

• Pickles
